Analysis
The Nativity Story and the Story of Perseus have many similarities.
1. King Herod and Acrisius both feared that they would be overthrown by a child in their kingdom In order to deal with the threats, both attempted to have the child killed; Herod tried through the infanticide of the Jewish boys and Acrisius through sending Perseus to kill Medusa. 2. In both situations, the prophecies that were told to the kings were fulfilled Perseus killed Acrisius using the head of Medusa. Herod died of a painful disease, but after his death, Jesus returned to Israel and gained popularity with the people. |
3. An unlikely suspect kills both the kings
Perseus was a poor boy that was perceived to have no power by King Polydectes, and thus Polydectes did not fear him. As well, Jesus was an unlikely heir to be the king of kings being born into a poor family with no status. In this, King Herod feared only the thought of losing power, not Jesus himself. |
4. Both Mary and Danae were impregnated through a force of nature
In the story of Perseus, Danae is locked in a bronze tower, yet is still able to become impregnated. This is because Zeus impregnates her in the form of a shower of gold. In the Bible, the Virgin Mary is impregnated by the power of the Holy Spirit. Both of the women also end up giving birth to the sons of gods.
